Enlighten us please...

We have slightly changed My Dhaba's template color combinations today. Keeping black as the base background color (#000, we like this color), we were trying to change the colors and sizes of title/headers/links/text areas. How does it look now?

It would be really something great if you could feel free and enlighten us on how we could provide you more higher satisfaction and comfortable stay as a valuable guest of My Dhaba.

All your kind feedback and suggestions on these are highly appreciated. Cheers!

Sincerely,

VK Narayanan

i like white better, its soothing to our eyes. I love black , but honestly for this kind of a foodblog ( which we keep reading daily ) its very irritaing to the eyes . White or any light pleasant color for that matter would be great.( i know thers not much of a choice in the templates )
I love all ur recipe VKN, u r one great CHEF !!! keep up ur good work :)

Greetings--

This is my first visit to your blog (I followed the link from your post on eGullet). The content looks excellent, but in answer to this post, I must say that some of your current font and color choices make it a bit hard for me to read. The main problem for me is the body text--not enough contrast with the black background. Looks like the body text color is gray--if it were white, that would help a lot. Choosing a heavier font might also help. For what it's worth, I have no problem at all reading the headers (the light green really "pops" against the black background).

In general, light fonts on dark backgrounds tend to be harder to read than dark fonts on light backgrounds. But I admit those dark backgrounds can look pretty stylish--you just have to experiment a bit with the font colors until you find one that offers the best contrast. A lot of web designers try to deal with the design challenge by picking "flourescent" type font colors, but that can backfire too--day-glo pink text on a black background will certainly stand out, but it can be really tiring on the eyes after a page or two, making it not the best choice for blogs or other applications with a lot of text.

Anyway, just a little feedback from a long-time web-geek with weak eyes. :-)

VKN, I like the previous color template better. I actually had to highlight/select the words to read this post:) I agree with mizducky -dark font on light background is easier to read.

It looks fine to me. I'm not sure if I see the difference between the previous color combinations and the new change now. Looks the same to me... There's nothing wrong with it.

My humble opinion,
Paz

VK, I find it very difficult to read with a black background. A lighter colour on the background would really help.

Can't put my finger to what it was, but I too liked the earlier layout better than this one, VKN. Though the font size is bigger now (and thus easier to read for many), the colours are a bit jarring, if I may :P

A warm welcome to Mizducky for being our new guest of the day.

Thank you dear all. Amazing inputs. We are still experimenting with the font colors to find one that offers the best contrast :-)

Changes made for now...
- font size changed from small to medium.
- title color changed from gray to forestgreen
- text color changed from gray to white
- links color changed from dark blue to stateblue
- background kept it same, the black (really sorry Priya and SF, we just don't know why we are diehard fans of this color)

Kindly feel free to tell us what you really think of these changes and more inputs please, if any.

SF - thank you once again for your concern. We are learning by trying all permutations and combinations. Your input really helps.

Just made two more changes, stateblue for the links and mediumstateblue for the visited ones. Is that okay now? Do you have any suggestions that would go with this black background? Any pink designers around? :-)

u can make MY DHABA to lightest yellow almost close to ivory, for the subtitles the light green is great and the font size uve chosen is perfect. But avoid purple and any dark colors for this back ground. Everything else seems fine to me. I wish u had lot of choices, i could even design a webpage for you but then i guess in blogger.com u can only use thier templates.

Priya - You are so kind, really helping us a lot. I am making the desired changes right now. Not had any experience in designing or worked with color combinations before :-) Thank you once again. How does it look now? Hope things are once again settled down.

Mathy - we were under assumption that all were just fine with colors. We did not receive any inputs from our guests so far on this. Now that we are experimenting with all possible color combinations, we need your suggestions.

Only one area we need to sort out for now, that is the color for external links - is that okay now with this color? I will definitely send you a separate mail very shortly.

it is definitely better than the 'slate blue' you had earlier.

but..

it's still hurtful to the eye. :(

sorry to be nagging you with my frank opinions.

It's just that content-wise your blog is incomparable. But the layout leaves a lot to be desired. :(

Kindly feel free Mathy. We are learning from you. We do not take these as nagging, not at all. We really do not want to change the black background, some kind of affinity to that color. We are currently running through all the links that you had given to come up something that offers the best contrast .

We are so sorry that it is still hurtful to your eye. Would you please suggest any other color combinations to go perfectly with black background?

Ufh ho... kindly give us ur email add once again. I missed noting it down. Sorry for that.

Priya, no problems at all here, not at all in trouble. What we need is your valuable suggestions (yes as much as possible) to make this look good or until all our guests are comfortable and happy. So, please dont hesitate in telling us what you really think. Thank you for your kind inputs once again.

Sure. We will be adding more curries in the coming days. Are you looking for any particular curry?

Thank you everyone for all your kind suggestions and immediate feedback. Finally it seems the colors are somewhat better now. We are willing to make few more subtle changes with the colors to make it even better.

It is going to be a curry week :-), we will definitely try.

vkn, the black background is definitely more burden to the eyes. Maybe you should choose some light background and a dark foreground. Also the new font is bigger, so I have to keep scrolling often. The old size seemed better to me. Thanks!

Blogger Swamy VKN said...

Yes Ravi. Few of my friends mentioned to me the same. I'm converting it back to medium from larger size.

Request to all who requested for a larger size - you would be able to make bigger/biggest size by selecting IE's view/text size. Please check. Sorry for this.
